Who We Are
By way of introduction, my name is Shawn Coolen and I have over 14 years of experience within the field of social work, working with individuals and families to address the struggles that they are facing. From this experience I have come to realize that everyone goes through storms in their life, regardless of race, creed, gender, or socioeconomic status. This has led to my passion for helping people and the choosing of the name Beyond the Storm Counselling Services.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degree from Redeemer University, and a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree from Yorkville University. I am a member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. My life experience, work within social services, and educational background have provided me with a unique set of skills that I can now use in the service of those trying to navigate the storms of life.
In my sessions I blend skills from a variety of approaches, including cognitive behavioural, solution-focused, and person-centred. This blend is focused on assisting the client in developing strategies for coping, regulating emotion, relaxation, and improving quality of life. I use an empathetic, genuine, and non-judgmental approach that is focused on each client’s strengths and uniqueness. Click on the tab "Counselling Approaches” for further information about these approaches.
